These Amazing Spots Near Fairbanks, Alaska Are Perfect To Go Fishing

Few things in the world are more relaxing – or more exciting, depending on the day – than fishing. With so many freshwater lakes and rivers, fishing in Anchorage, Alaska is top-rated. From fly fishing to shore casting, here are some of the best spots to try your luck. Please note, that these aren’t ranked in any particular order, but we have mentioned some of the fish you’re most likely to catch.

In the midst of a wild, untamed land, my ears strained for a familiar sound. Nothing! No car horns, rush-hour traffic, ringing cell phones or other annoyances of civilization; just the river. The calming ease of the river’s gliding water, the occasional screech of a soaring eagle and joyful exclamations of my partner landing king salmon were the only sounds given up by this portion of Alaska’s wilderness.

My partner and I couldn’t believe the solitude, the scenery and the fact we had an entire stream of king salmon all to ourselves. It was so refreshing not to jostle for position among hundreds of frantic shoreline anglers crowding in to ambush approaching salmon.

For sure, one of the true joys of Alaskan wilderness is partaking of world-class salmon fishing without the crowds.

Sight-fishing for the highly coveted king salmon is an awesome experience and can be downright heavenly when conducted in pristine surroundings with no competition. While Paradise will have to wait, interior Alaska does offer the promise fine fishing for any angler journeying to Fairbanks and beyond.

Overshadowed by Alaska’s famous coastal fisheries, the Interior doesn’t get the respect it deserves within the sport-fishing realm. Admittedly, Alaska’s coastal region generates some of the world’s best fishing, with which few places can compare. However,Alaska’s Interior has some fine fishing adventures as well, some of which might suit your style perfectly.

The Chena River

The Chena is “the” river around Fairbanks. Beginning as a trickle deep in the wilderness, the Chena River gains in stature as it flows by Chena Hot Springs and cuts through the edge of a rugged wild land. Widening even more as it nears town, the Chena shoots through downtown Fairbanks before finally emptying into the Tanana River.

FAIRBANKS

In Alaska’s interior, temperatures drop dramatically in late October. But you won’t notice the cold when you’re pulling champion rainbow trout from the water. Ice fishing season starts here in late November and is best through mid-January.

BIRCH LAKE

The fish in this 800-acre lake — including arctic char, Coho salmon, rainbow trout and Chinook salmon — always seem to be biting, making this a great spot for novice ice fishers. There are privately owned hard-sided ice fishing huts surrounding Birch Lake, evidence of its popularity with area anglers. Look for the clusters of huts. That is a surefire sign of the best fishing holes. Get in on the action by renting one of the four ice huts or the single lakeside cabin, all available through the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.

QUARTZ LAKE

Quartz Lake is a two-hour drive farther down the road from Fairbanks. Searching for trophy-sized rainbow trout, anglers here typically bait their hooks with fresh cocktail shrimp. Rainbow trout, Arctic char, Coho salmon, and Chinook salmon all live in this water, where the trout and char, usually, measure between 10 and 18 inches. As at Birch Lake, there are ice fishing huts available for rent through the Alaska DNR.

MAT-SU VALLEY

Billing itself the “Stillwater Fishing Capital of Alaska,” the Matanuska-Susitna Valley is home to an abundance of roadside lakes that entice the winter angler. More than 80 lakes in the region are annually stocked with landlocked salmon, Arctic grayling, Arctic char and rainbow trout.

MATANUSKA LAKES STATE RECREATION AREA

Also known by its former name Kepler-Bradley, this is a popular state park that draws ice fishers to several lakes stocked with trout and Arctic grayling.  Open year round, the park is a convenient drive from Anchorage, lying just north of the Glenn Highway at milepost 36. The parking lot isn’t accessible in winter; look for six parking spots outside the park entrance gate.

BUCKET LIST OR BUST

Don’t let colder temperatures keep you on the couch this winter when you could be walking on water in the Last Frontier. Whether you’re an experienced angler or curious newcomer, Alaska’s abundance of stocked roadside lakes — and helpful resources from its department of fish and game — make ice fishing the “bucket list” experience of a lifetime.

When I go fishing I am looking for that out of the way secret place if you will fishing spot that the locals know as good if I am only visit the area once in my life. Lets make the best of the time in Fairbanks, Alaska.
