These Amazing Spots Near Jacksonville, Florida Are Perfect To Go Fishing
Few things in the world are more relaxing – or more exciting, depending on the day – than fishing. With so many freshwater lakes and rivers, fishing in Jacksonville, Florida is top-rated. From fly fishing to shore casting, here are some of the best spots to try your luck. Please note, that these aren’t ranked in any particular order, but we have mentioned some of the fish you’re most likely to catch.
BEACHES
The biggest fishing venues we have are the beaches – more than 100 miles of them, with four major inlets bisecting them. That brings the fish. Surf fishing is a popular sport, one that anglers can pursue all year. Several stretches of beach are accessible by car. Others offer a walk and more solitude. At higher tides, the fish move across the shoreward sandbars and are within 30 feet of the shoreline. A half-pound of shrimp, a sand spike and a small cooler are the only other trappings you’ll need. Whiting, redfish, speckled sea trout, pompano and black drum are the more sought-after species.
PIERS
The First Coast has four major ocean piers: Flagler County Pier south of the Matanzas Inlet, the St. Johns County Pier on St. Augustine Beach, the Jacksonville Beach Pier and the half-mile long pier in Fort Clinch State Park that divides Cumberland Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. All are handicapped-accessible. The Jax Beach and St. Johns County piers sell the bait and tackle you’ll need to target fish. In addition to the surf-fishing species, the piers also attract species such as sheepshead. King mackerel are caught off the Jacksonville Beach Pier in the summer.
Anglers can call ahead to find out what’s biting: Fort Clinch, (904) 272-7274; Jacksonville Beach, (904) 241-1515; St. Johns County, (904) 461-0119. There is no staffing at Flagler Beach. Admission is $6 per vehicle at Fort Clinch, $4 for adults at Jacksonville Beach and $3 in St. Johns County.
GUANA DAM
The Guana Dam divides what anglers refer to as the Guana River and Guana Lake, both located in South Ponte Vedra Beach at the Guana-Tolomato Research Reserve. Wading the river side of the dam can be good for speckled sea trout, flounder and redfish. But the magic of the dam occurs on the lake side. On full moons when tides are high, fish move from all over the lake to the dam trying breach it. This is especially true in the fall and winter months, when nor’easters blow the water against the dam, creating extra-high tides. Fishing for redfish and flounder can be incredible under these conditions, but you’ll find wall-to-wall anglers there as well. In slower times, panfish gang up under the dam. Call (904) 823-4500. Admission is $3 per vehicle.
SHANDS BRIDGE
The Shands Bridge crosses the St. Johns River at Green Cove Springs. Here, the main draw is mullet fishing. You’ll need a fishing pole. A cane pole works fine with a small cork above a No. 2 hook baited with pieces of worm or small pieces of white plastic jig tails. Some are using a spinning rod, small float and a multihooked sabiki rig. Your best bet is to take the time to watch the pros lining the abutments to the bridge. It looks easy, but it isn’t. The mullet runs are seasonal, but it’s happening now.
ST. JOHNS RIVER
Some places seem to be made for children and fishing. Pacetti’s is one of them. It sits on a pretty stretch of Trout Creek. You’ll catch mainly bream off the docks there, but speckled perch, catfish and largemouth bass are not uncommon. Pacetti’s has bait, rigs and advice. On the river itself, there are piers/docks in Green Cove Springs, Palatka and Welaka that are popular for crabbing and catching mullet. Call Pacetti’s at (904) 284-5356. It’s located on Florida 13, about halfway between Jacksonville and Hastings.
