These Amazing Spots Near Corpus Christi, Texas Are Perfect To Go Fishing

Few things in the world are more relaxing – or more exciting, depending on the day – than fishing. With so many freshwater lakes and rivers, fishing in Corpus Christi, Texas is top-rated. From fly fishing to shore casting, here are some of the best spots to try your luck. Please note, that these aren’t ranked in any particular order, but we have mentioned some of the fish you’re most likely to catch.

BOB HALL PIER

Where: This 1,240-foot Gulf pier is located at J.P. Luby Surf Park on Padre Island.

Cost: $3 per person; $4 per pole (3 pole limit per person); $2 to bring a cast net; $1 entry for seniors 65 and older, active/disabled military; $1 per pole for seniors, active/disabled military; $20 72-hour pass with 2 poles.

Hours: 24/7, year round.

Fish species: Trout, redfish, whiting, pompano, black drum, jack crevalle, sharks, Spanish mackerel, tarpon, kingfish and sheepshead.

Tips: Good year-round spot for anglers who don’t want to travel far from Corpus Christi. If the surf is green, try live shrimp under a float. In murky water, use live/dead shrimp or combine with Fishbites Fish ‘n Strips on the bottom for drum and redfish.

Amenities: Concessions, restrooms, nearby bath house and covered picnic tables, plus bait and tackle sold during the day. Rod and reels for rent. Free parking (no sticker required in parking lot). Full service restaurant, Mikel May’s Beachside Bar & Grill, serves lunch, dinner and weekend brunch.

SAN JOSE JETTY

Where: This jetty is accessible by taking the Jetty Boat out of Fisherman’s Wharf, 900 N. Tarpon St. in Port Aransas.

Cost: Round-trip tickets run $12 for adults; $6 for children; or $100 for a 10-trip discount card. Departures: 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m.

Amenities: No restrooms or conveniences of any kind.

Tips: Rent a jetty cart at Fisherman’s Wharf to carry equipment. To keep from getting snagged on rocks, try a lemon rig to suspend baits in the water column. If fish aren’t biting, there’s always beach combing, swimming, birding, turtle watching, or bicycling along the remote San Jose Island beach. Wear closed-toe shoes on the rocks. In winter, some of the rocks are covered in slick algae. Some winter anglers wear metal cleats to improve footing. Watch out for fish- and bait-stealing raccoons.

Fish species: Trout, redfish, pompano, black drum, Spanish mackerel, sharks, jack crevalle, tarpon and sheepshead are common on either side of the rocks, depending on the weather, water conditions and time of year. Something is always in season. Summer and spring is best.

SUNSET LAKE

Where: North of Harbor Bridge in Portland.

Tips: This is a traditional wading/bank spot for Corpus Christi Bay and Nueces Bay. You’ll find mostly hard bay bottoms with deep guts and oyster shell. Long wading pants or waders are recommended for protection against jellyfish during warmer months. Hard-soled reef boots (www.Foreverlast.com) are best for wading in shell.

Amenities: None.

Cost: No fee.

Directions: From Corpus Christi take the Harbor Bridge northward into Portland. Take the Moore Avenue exit off Highway 181. Before you get to Moore Avenue turn right onto Bayview Boulevard and follow the road to Sunset Street and turn right. This will lead you to Sunset Park and the Corpus Christi Bay shoreline. Park along this road. If you fish the park, note that fishing and using a cast net in the tidal pools and smaller ponds are prohibited. Limit your fishing to the main lake. Read the entry sign for rules.

AIRPORT ROAD

Where: North of Rockport off Texas Highway 35 in Aransas County.

Tips: This Aransas Pathways kayak launch site is a good early morning fishing spot with oyster reefs to the north and good trout structure to the south. It’s an easy wading spot, with at least 100 yards of firm bay bottoms. The bay is wind-protected except during a hard northern breeze.

Directions: Texas Highway 35 north of Rockport and turn left or west on Airport Road along the south side of the Aransas County Airport. This road will dead end. The park is well marked and parking is available.

Cost: No fee.

Amenities: None.

FISH PASS JETTY

Where: Near Mustang Island State Park, between Corpus Christi and Port Aransas.

Tips: This short jetty gives anglers a high and dry perch to fish the gulf surf. The basic angling style is dead bait on the bottom, but live mullet or shrimp works best. Soft plastics and topwater plugs also produce fish during calmer conditions. And because the jetties are within Mustang Island State Park, no fishing license is required.

Species: Whiting, sand trout, speckled trout, sheepshead, redfish, flounder, jack crevalle, and occasionally snook and mangrove snapper.

Amenities: None.

Directions: Accessible from the main park entrance as well as from Beach Access Road 2. Four-wheel-drive is recommended. The channel this jetty once flanked silted in many years ago.

BIG TREE AT ST. CHARLES BAY

Where: Just north of Rockport on the Lamar Peninsula

Tips: Easy access spot for wading or kayak fishing in St. Charles Bay. This is a good year-round spot that peaks in spring and fall. Waders will find the shoreline has mostly seagrass and sandy potholes and some areas with softer bottoms near shore. The bottom is firmer in spots. This area is not protected during a strong southeast wind. A short paddle northward from Big Tree provides access to coves and small sloughs. Watch for alligators.

Species: Trout, redfish, drum and flounder.

Cost: No fee.

Amenities: None.

Directions: Take Highway 35 north past the Rockport exits until the road ends at a T. Turn right and drive east for a mile or two. At the traffic signal (convenience store) turn left onto Business Highway 35 and continue northward through Rockport. Cross Copano Bay on the causeway and turn right at the first traffic light at Lamar Beach Road. Continue on this winding wooded road past Goose Island State Park until you reach St. Charles Bay. Turn left and follow the shoreline until you see a cleared gravel or caliche area on the right. Park there. It’s just before 12th Street.

Red Dot Pier on the Humble Channel

When: Sunday – Thursday 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m., Friday – Saturday 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Why: Located directly on the Humble Channel, Red Dot Pier offers a great fishing experience for beginners and experienced anglers alike. Not only does Red Dot provide a well lit pier for night fishing, but it offers bait, snacks and pole rentals as well.
