Interesting Facts
Michigan is a state in the Great Lakes and Midwestern regions of the United States. Its name originates from the Ojibwe word mishigamaa, meaning “large water” or “large lake”. With a population of just over 10 million, Michigan is the tenth most populous of the 50 United States, with the 11th most extensive total area, and is the largest state by total area east of the Mississippi River. Its capital is Lansing, and its largest city is Detroit. Metro Detroit is among the nation’s most populous and largest metropolitan economies. Michigan is the only state to consist of two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula is often noted as being shaped like a mitten. The Upper Peninsula is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac, a five-mile channel that joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The Mackinac Bridge connects the peninsulas. These Amazing Spots Near Huron Bay, Michigan Are Perfect To Go Fishing
Few things in the world are more relaxing – or more exciting, depending on the day – than fishing. With so many freshwater lakes and rivers, fishing in Huron Bay, Michigan is top-rated. From fly fishing to shore casting, here are some of the best spots to try your luck. Please note, that these aren’t ranked in any particular order, but we have mentioned some of the fish you’re most likely to catch.
Bluegill are among the most plentiful game fish in Michigan’s lakes and ponds, and ice fishing for these feisty panfish often rewards anglers with a hefty catch and a tasty meal. Bluegill from 6 to 8 inches in length are common in many Michigan waters, and fish measuring 10 inches or more are brought up through the ice every year. Ice fishing for bluegill requires only simple tackle and bait, and the most difficult part of pursuing bluegill through the ice is finding fish. Once located, bluegill typically bite readily in Michigan waters, especially early in the winter season.
Finding Fish
The start of the ice fishing season varies from year to year depending on the weather, but safe ice usually forms on Michigan waters some time in December. During the first month or so of the season, bluegill are typically found in shallow water between 2 and 6 feet deep. Look for shallow areas that have rocks, gravel, brush piles and weedy cover — green vegetation is best — with quick access to deeper water nearby. At some point during January or February, bluegill usually move a little deeper, but you should still be able to find them in 20 feet of water or less in most lakes. Bluegill generally return to the shallows in late winter, just before the ice begins to break up.
Fishing Tips and Tactics
When it comes to presentation, keep it simple. A light ice fishing rod and reel spooled with four-pound test line works perfectly for bluegill, and the best bait usually consists of a tiny teardrop jig tipped with live bait such as wax worms, spikes or other larvae. Small red nightcrawlers also work well. Jigging can be effective, especially if fish are feeding aggressively; once you find the right depth you can also attach a small bobber to your line to suspend the bait right where the fish are. Bluegill typically share habitat with other panfish such as pumpkinseed sunfish, yellow perch and crappie, so ice fishing often yields a mixed bag of fish.
