Lake Brazos
The Brazos River, as it runs through Waco, has attracted anglers for generations, but in recent decades, the quality of fishing has skyrocketed, thanks to an aggressive stocking and habitat-creation program.
Fish for largemouth bass around downed timber and grass beds using soft plastic baits, spinnerbaits and topwater lures. Crappie anglers can find action near deep brush piles, bridge pilings and other deeper water structure. Catfish are plentiful — use dough bait for channel catfish, and shad or cut bait for blue and yellow catfish.
Navarro Mills
Navarro Mills is one of the state’s best crappie lakes and is located about 35 miles northeast of Waco, near Dawson. The upper end of the lake is heavily timbered and holds good concentrations of fish. The lake’s marina offers fee-based public fishing, and the comfort of a covered fishing dock with chairs make it a popular place. Minnows and small jigs are top-producing baits.
The marina features a monthly tournament that awards payouts to the top two big fish caught on the dock during each month.
The state-record crappie, a 4.56-pounder, was caught from Navarro Mills back in 1968.
Richland-Chambers
Richland-Chambers Reservoir, located east of Corsicana, is a popular lake for catching catfish and hybrid-stripers.
Guide Mark Parker says to look for hybrids in the shallow waters of the main lake early in the morning, then move to deeper waters, in the 25-foot range, later in the day.
Typically, hybrids are good from the Highway 287 bridge to the dam.
Parker uses slab lures and jig heads with soft plastic tails, and occasionally hooks into a big flathead or blue cat while slabbing for white bass and hybrids. For blues, Parker fishes the main lake shoreline in 1-10 feet of water using fresh shad.
“It is prime time for eating-size blue cats,” he said. “When you start seeing shad coming right up to the banks at daylight, it’s time for the blues.”
